Worship Abounds
Religion has played an important part in Suffolk's history since Glebe Episcopal Church was established in 1642 on land donated to the Lower Parish of the Anglican Church-the established church of Colonial Virginia. The current facility (located at 4400 Nansemond Parkway) was built in 1738, replacing an earlier 17th century building. Weekly services are still held at Glebe Episcopal Church, just as they are held at more than 120 places of worship across the city. Suffolk offers wide
assortment of places of worship - from African Methodist Episcopal to Southern
Baptist, and from Catholic to Protestant.
