Mayor Linda T. Johnson was sworn in as Suffolk’s first directly elected mayor on January 5, 2009. Prior to that, Mayor Johnson was appointed mayor on July 5, 2006, by her colleagues on City Council and is Suffolk’s first female mayor. She also served two terms as the representative of Sleepy Hole Borough.
Mayor Johnson has a diverse professional background. She served as the Public Information Officer for the State Corporation Commission in Richmond and as an Eligibility Officer for the Suffolk Department of Social Services. Mayor Johnson was also an English teacher at John F. Kennedy High School. In 1986, Mayor Johnson began her career in real estate as an agent with Carpenter Residential Sales. She joined Long and Foster Real Estate in 1998. Mayor Johnson has been a member of the Circle of Excellence of the Board of Realtors since 1987 and is also a member of the National Association of Realtors.
Mayor Johnson currently serves on the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission and the Hampton Roads Mayors and Chair Caucus.
She is a graduate of John Yeates High School and Westhampton College at the University of Richmond, with a Bachelors of Arts in English and Journalism with a minor in Sociology. In addition to all of her professional endeavors, Mayor Johnson is active in several community service organizations.
